JOB DETAIL

The Office of the Dean – Makerere University School of Public Health seeks to recruit a qualified, dynamic and self-motivated individual to take on the position of IT Officer. The job holder shall report directly to the Dean of the School of Public Health and take charge of all IT functions, manage the School’s technology operations, and the implementation of new IT systems and policies. .

Responsibilities:
The position holder shall;
• Provide leadership in the technology portfolio for enablement and innovation
• Develop policies and strategies for internal IT operations to drive attainment of the School’s goals
• Advise MakSPH Management on ICT issues
• Design, configure and maintain the MakSPH ICT system and infrastructure including Networks, File servers, Email servers, and Internet including all information management systems ranging from academic, finance among others
• Install new software, updates, and anti-viruses on all computers and awareness of all dates for Installations
• Carry out regular data/applications back-up and contingency recovery
• Set up new users’ accounts and profiles and deal with password issues, ensuring the regular update of the School’s official email accounts
• Run regular checks on network and data security
• Handle all MakSPH data with high confidentiality and integrity, and ensure that data are protected from external persons
• Provide technical IT support to the teaching and research functions of the School
• Install and configure computer hardware operating systems and applications
• Troubleshoot system and network problems, diagnosing and solving faults, and sort out ICT related problems/ or where necessary recommend professionals
• Identify, manage and supervise external vendors in the delivery of contracted work
• Ensure regular servicing and maintenance of all MakSPH Back-ups, Laptops, Up’s as per an ICT asset count
• Maintain an Inventory of all ICT equipment for offices handled and keeping an updated register
• Support the procurement of IT equipment; providing specifications upon request (assessment of needs, drafting technical specifications, and advice during the evaluation of quotations)
• Test and evaluate the new technology, and support the roll-out of new applications
• Manage the webserver and provide technical support to the communications and e-learning platforms
• Participate in training staff in Computer essentials and provide support where necessary
• Manage the CCTV systems to ensure 100% uptime and operation and provide support to recover footage
• Manage the School’s network to ensure 100% uptime
• Follow-up the MakSPH ICT Audit points of Action
• Be the secretariat for the School’s ICT committee and provide technical advice
• Perform any other ICT related duties that may be assigned by the Dean

Required qualifications and competencies
• Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Infrastructure Management, Engineering or related field
• A Master’s degree in an IT-related field, or Management
• Knowledge of Microsoft and Cisco certifications
• Additional certifications in the area of ICT are an asset
• 5+ years’ experience in an IT environment
• Ability to write and identify technical specifications for ICT equipment
• Demonstrated experience building websites and working with CMS including Drupal, WordPress, and Moodle
• Knowledge and experience working with Linux, Windows server and Active directory
• Experience designing and maintaining networks and working knowledge of firewalls (sophos, pfsense), routers, switches, WLAN
• Working knowledge of VMware and Hyper-V
• Knowledge of the workings of CCTV equipment
• Experience repairing IT equipment (desktops, laptops, printers, projectors)
• Good knowledge of software and database applications and ability to work with new innovative tools
• Experience working with Quickbooks accounting software
• Knowledge of electrical work and electronics
• Knowledge of digital communication platforms such as websites, online collaboration tools, social media
