JOB DETAILS:
Children of Grace works with marginalized and vulnerable children and families affected by the scourge of disease and poverty who need a lot of psycho-social support to cope with the day to day challenges of life. The person in this position will work in a confidential setting with Children of Grace Sponsored students who are experiencing personal difficulties, to help them overcome their problems and to make appropriate changes to their lives with the aim of demonstrating the love of Jesus Christ to the children. The ideal counsellor will be competent in prioritizing and working with little supervision, self-motivated and trustworthy. A children of Grace Counsellor is to be a Christian role-model for the children, providing relevant and targeted counselling to children offering social, spiritual and personal support. .

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
• To perform this job successfully the individual must be able to perform each of the requirements listed below which are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
The Main Duties Are As Follows:

  1.  Child Counselling (65%)
  2. Guardian engagement (15%)
  3. Report Writing and planning (15%)
  4.  Other responsibilities (5%)

Child Counselling (65%)

  • The Counsellor will spend most of their time listening to, empathize with, encourage and help to empower children. The nature of problems encountered varies according to the setting and could include, for example, death in the family, domestic violence, depression, anxiety, the need to manage harmful emotions and behaviors, or difficulties with coping with traumatic experience and events
  •  Develop positive and meaningful relationships with children through understanding the child and scheduling one on one counseling sessions on a regular basis depending on the needs of the child.
  • Providing counselling face to face through visiting children at school and at home and over the telephone when need arises.
  • Working with individuals, families or groups of students who may be dealing with the same challenges each week.
  • Keeping confidential records of all the children and families in the program.
  • Building a relationship of trust and respect with children.
  • Track, analyze and compile all the sessions and track changes in the lives of the children.
  • Working with the Health Coordinator provide targeted support through scheduled sessions with children dealing with chronic illnesses.

Guardian engagement (15%)

  • Conduct home visits with the guardians to ensure that the children undergoing counselling are receiving the necessary care and support from the parents i.e. academic, personal, emotional, hygiene, feeding etc.
  • Follow up with parents on their responsibilities towards the children that are dealing with difficulties.
  • With the medical Coordinator organize guardian talks to discuss child psychological and health health issues for the guardians and children.
  • Support the community Ambassadors in implementing activities related to chid counselling and support.

Other responsibilities (5%)

  • Other duties as required, including occasional work on weekends and public holidays for which time off in lieu can be taken in consultation with the Director of Operations

• Significant experience counselling clients and children.
• Excellent computer and typing skills and proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Power point.
• Ability to analyze problems and make sound operational decisions.
• Excellent organizational skills and methodological approach to program management.
• Attention to detail and ability to keep track of clients in an organized way.
• Ability to follow through on tasks with minimal supervision.
• Ability to be a team player and leader.
• Professional attitude and appearance.
• Ability to work under pressure with minimum supervision

Qualifications

  • Preferred: Bachelors degree in Counselling and Guidance and Counselling or 3 years’ experience of work in counselling.
  • 4 years’ work experience in a busy NGO counselling clients.
  •  Great organizational skills and the ability to track clients and conduct well-documented follow-ups.
